Naani

Naani passed away due to a cardiac arrest on the night of 7th and 8th June, 2014. I received a phone call from my sister at the early hours of the morning, informing me about it. The first thought that crossed my mind was how my mother would cope up with this loss. By then, I didn’t know what happened to Naani. I could only imagine my shattered mother feeling homeless, guideless and still to sail through 30-40 years of her life, now without her mother. I talked to my mother for less than a minute and before I could think anything about the situation or what to do about it, I found myself in metro, traveling towards Kashmere Gate ISBT. True Lie

It was a time when I used to lie a lot. So much that lying had become a habit in me. My first response to any question was a lie. I enrolled in a computer literacy course for one year after my school finished. Honestly, it is the only worthy education I have had after my schooling that proved beneficial for my life ahead. My computer teacher was a Kashmiri girl in her mid-twenties. I am naming her ‘Naina’ in this account. She signed up as a teacher in the mid-term and in few weeks, she was a favourite among the students because of the knowledge she possessed. It was the end of the year and during those festive days from Christmas to New Year’s Eve, I didn’t attend any classes. Upon joining back again after almost a week, I was asked the reason of my regular absence. I lied yet again, but quite a wayward one this time. Continue reading

An Equation

“How many twos are there in an eight?” Sandhya literally shouted at Divya this time. Poor Divya was trying her best to figure out the answer without using the calculator, as her mother, Sandhya, had ordered. After spending several minutes playing with her hair and eating the back of the pencil, thinking how on Earth will knowing the number of twos in an eight help her in her life, she gave up. She looked at her mother innocently and shrugged in disappointment. Sandhya’s anger levels shot up and she raised her hand to hit Divya. Before it could reach Divya’s cheeks, tears dwelled up in Divya’s eyes and she started to sob.

“Not again Divya! Divide eight by two and tell me the correct answer quickly”, Sandhya said. Although she was losing her composure seeing her daughter cry, she also wanted her daughter to solve the basic mathematical questions without the help of a calculator. Continue reading

Being : ‘Curious’

How do you define curiosity? Is it a positive aspect or a negative aspect of someone’s character?

I have answered many questions in my life but they were not all the questions that were asked. There were many questions that had no connection with the heart, questions that were merely of the head and the head is already filled up with so much of garbage. I’m sorry I don’t want to be unkind, I am just trying to unburden the mind. We need to choose the questions that help our mind to unburden itself.

There are questions which are concerned with our surroundings, conditionings, beliefs. I am against all beliefs as such. I don’t support any belief for the simple reason that it is a belief. I don’t want to believe, I want to know and the first condition to know is that I shall drop all my beliefs. Continue reading

Rock Star

By AmanChawla

30th November, 2011, Janakpuri District Centre, Delhi, About 4’o clock in the evening.

“Jo bhi main, kehna chaahun, barbaad karein alfaaz mere… oh yaye…. oo yeahyeahye…” is what I was repeatedly humming while stepping out of Satyam Cineplex. The lines of this very special song from the movie ‘Rockstar’ were struck in my mind so adhesively that I just couldn’t resist singing it over and over again. The show had just finished and the song had its everlasting effect induced in me.

“Maine yehi socha hai aksar, tu bhi main bhi sabhi hain sheeshe, khud hi ko hum sabhi mein dekhe, juda hue to…” before I could apply that high note, my shoulder was tapped by someone. I knew who it was, none other than Gurdeep, my buddy whom I had left behind while singing the heavenly tunes of Rahman Saab while walking out of the cinema. Continue reading
